
How Master Key Systems Are Structured for Offices and Multi-Unit Buildings
A properly engineered keying hierarchy is built around levels called 'levels of keying.' At the base level, each individual lock is pinned to respond only to its own change key — the key issued to a single tenant, employee, or resident. Above that sits a sub-master key, which opens a defined group of locks, such as all the offices on one floor or all the units in one wing. At the top of the pyramid is the grand master key, which opens every lock in the system. In very large facilities — think a Wellesley college residential building or a multi-story corporate complex off Washington Street — a great-grand master level can be added as well. Each tier is mechanically distinct; the cylinders are pinned using a carefully calculated key-cut matrix so that no two levels overlap accidentally.
The mortise lock is the workhorse of this kind of system. Unlike a cylindrical door knob lock, a mortise lock body fits into a pocket machined into the door edge, giving it a larger, more complex chassis that accommodates additional pin stacks and security features. That physical depth makes mortise lock cylinders especially well-suited for high-keyway-count master key matrices, which is why you will find them in nearly every serious commercial and multi-unit keying project.
